President Hipolito Mejia sent to the Senate an agreement for the construction, development and operation of a nation railroad system, as reported in the Listin Diario newspaper. This would be an investment of US$300 million, or RD$5,000 million. The government is granting a 50-year concession to a Puerto Rican group, whose identity and track record building railroads has not been revealed. The project calls for the construction of train stations in Santiago, La Vega, Bonao, Haina, Santo Domingo and Villa Altagracia, along the 170-km railroad route.
