Unable to compete with the widespread mobile phone technologies, Skytel has announced it will close its Dominican Republic beeper service on 31 July. El Caribe reports that the company was unable to match rates of competing companies. The entrance of Orange and Centennial into the market also were affecting the company forcing the decision to cut growing losses. Skytel began operations in the DR five years ago.
