Miss Universe pageant turned down

The DR government has turned down hosting the Miss Universe pageant in 2003. The event comes with a franchise fee of U$5 million, not including the actual cost of hosting the event. The government turned down the event after the Hotel & Restaurant Association rejected it, saying the timing was not right and the industry had other priorities. The pageant was held here in 1977 when Gulf & Western Corporation picked up the tab.
