Ministry of Higher Education coming soon

The nation will soon have a new ministry: the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Secretaria de Estado de Educacion Superior, Ciencia y Tecnologia-SEESCT). El Caribe points out today that, with the exception of the state university, the main source of revenues for Dominican universities is tuition fees. Isidoro Santana, an education researcher, says the average cost of tuition at private universities is RD$10,841 for 50 credits, which is about US$680. In the DR, tuition at private universities costs less than grade school and high school education. Tuition has been kept low by universities relying on part time professors, many who teach one or two classes. Santana says the new law foresees the start of a System of Academic Careers, that would create full time professors.
