Debt ceiling proposed for Constitution

Former Central Bank governor Luis Toral said he will give a proposal to President Hipolito Mejia to set a ceiling of 10% of the Gross Domestic Product for government debt. He expressed his concern over the increasing levels of debt that will oblige coming generations to pay higher taxes. Toral spoke following a meeting with President Mejia to discuss appointments prior to the election of city officers for Salinas, Azua. Toral also proposes that the foreign debt not be more than 50% of the total debt. He also said he would suggest that no more than 15% of the National Budget be allotted to service the debt.
