Sammy the Great

Thirty-two-year-old Dominican slugger Sammy Sosa yesterday became the first player in Major League baseball history to reach the 60 home run plateau three times. Sosa batted his record-breaking 60th home run on Tuesday at Wrigley Field in front of a crowd of over 35,000 fans. The Cubs lost 5-4 to the Cincinatti Reds. Sammy Sosa’s three 60+ years were 1998 (66 homeruns), 1999 (63 home runs) and 2001 (60+ home runs). The feat is even more outstanding considering that it took almost 40 years for Roger Maris to set his 61 home run record, in 1961. That record was smashed by both Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire in 1998. Sammy is the only slugger to have batted more than 50 home runs in four consecutive years. For Sosa’s stats, see Espn
