There are fewer blackouts now that the government has made a US$50 million payment on the reported debt of more than US$200 with the power generators. Although blackouts continue in some areas, service has generally improved in the north of the country and in Santo Domingo. Superintendent of Electricity Jose Ovalles guaranteed that the power service will continue to improve and will be resolved by December. News reports say the Smith Enron plant, with 160 megawatts capacity, is now in operation, as well as the two Los Minas power plants with 105 megawatts each.
