Eduardo Latorre passes away

At the age of 62, former Foreign Minister Eduardo Latorre passed away yesterday in Miami, Florida of bone cancer. He is survived by his wife Lina Arzeno, his daughters Lina, Gabriela, Ximena and his son Eduardo. Latorre was foreign minister from 1996-2000, years during which the Dominican Republic did an about-face in its foreign policy after a long period of isolation under former President Joaqu?n Balaguer. Following the end of his term as minister, he acted as secretary of a high-level Organization of American States mission that mediated the conflict in Peru following the fall of the Fujimori government. Latorre was a graduate of economy and international relations from the University of California, where he also received a degree in diplomacy. A man of many accomplishments, he also completed a doctorate in political sciences at Columbia University in New York City. Aside from being foreign minister, he is also known for his years spent at the head of the Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), which he helped found.
