Navy arrests 86 boat people

The Navy has arrested 86 people, including four from Ecuador, accused of trying to travel illegally by boat to the US from various points along the DR coast. The head of the Navy, Vice Admiral Luis Alberto Humeau Hidalgo, said ten groups of illegal travelers have been detained in the last 72 hours. Listín Diario reports that a total of US$16,800 was seized from the four Ecuadorians who were using the money to pay their passage from Manzanillo to Miami. One of them said he was only here on vacation. But the Navy says a fishing boat not a tourism boat was involved and that the Ecuadorians had offered to pay the captain RD$60,000 for the trip.
