President Hipólito Mejía has invited Dominicans living in New York to come back home for Christmas to help release some of the tension and depression brought on by the terrorist attacks. The President was in New York City yesterday, touring the ground zero area with NY Governor George Pataki. He said I hope that in this time of psychological pressure all Dominicans know that we wait for them; the DR awaits them with open arms and a lot of solidarity. The country has been very worried in these difficult times. The President promised special aid for families of the Dominican victims of the tragedy but offered no specifics, saying I dont want to go into that subject, this is not the time to be a demagogue. President Mejía also attended a mass last night for the 41 Dominicans lost in the World Trade Center collapse. He continues his 3-day trip with a meeting with Senator Hillary Clinton, among others.
