The Aguilas Cibaeñas defeated the Estrellas Orientales in the first game of the Winter Baseball Championship finals. The Aguilas 8-2 won the game, which took place at the Estadio Cibao of Santiago. Most sportscasters favor the Aguilas Cibaeñas, Caribbean Series Champions, to win the 2000 series. The last time the Aguilas-Estrellas met in a final was in 1996, when coincidentally the Caribbean Series would also be held in Santo Domingo. The winner of the Winter Baseball Championship will go on to play the best teams of Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the DR in the Caribbean Baseball Championship that is slated to open in Santo Domingo, 2 February. The finals continue today at the San Pedro de Macorís Tetelo Vargas Stadium at 8 pm.
