A truck loaded with 42,000 tons of brown sugar, turned over at the Las Americas Highway, near the V Centenario Horse Race Track over the weekend. Hundreds of residents in nearby areas took advantage of the situation to stock up on sugar for personal use or sale. The cargo of brown sugar was being transported from Cristobal Colon sugar mill in San Pedro de Macorís to the port of Haina for export to the US. Sugar sells for RD$3.50 the lb. in the DR.
