The National Botanical Gardens was voted among the 10 best in the world by the Botanic Gardens Conservation International organization at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, England. The organization evaluated 1,846 botanical gardens around the world. The DR was pre-selected among 120 botanical gardens, and chosen among the 10 finalists. The organization recognized the Santo Domingo botanical gardens work with education, community work, local flora and plant conservation. 80,000 persons visited the Santo Domingo Botanical Gardens in 1999.
