Conflict within the PRSC for the presidency of the Chamber

Rafaela Alburquerque (PRSC-San Pedro de Macoris) is under fire in the Chamber of Deputies. Other PRSC deputies seek her post as president of the Chamber now that President-elect Hipólito Mejía said that the PRSC could keep the post. Sectors that adverse Alburquerque are airing what they feel are indications of corruption in office. She is being criticized, for example, for supposed irregularities in the construction of the modern social club the Chamber is building at a cost of RD$43 million. This includes a RD$14 million lot purchased from PRSC deputy Osvaldo Leger. "I am sure that they will not find anything wrong," she said. "If the audit did show anything wrong, I am willing to renounce my congressional immunity and let the case be heard in Dominican courts," she said. PRSC party leader, former President Joaquín Balaguer chose Alburquerque last year from 17 PRSC deputies in Congress. These sent a letter to Balaguer yesterday supporting Alburquerque’s aspirations to continue to preside the Chamber of Deputies. All PRSC deputies with the exception of Manuel Emigdio Mercedes and Miguel Sanz Jimenez signed the letter. PRSC sectors are also debating which party member should head the Dominican Municipal League, today in the hands of former La Altagracia province senator, Amable Aristy Castro.
