El Siglo special correspondent Ramon Colombo reporting on President-elect Hipólito Mejía’s visit to Washington, D.C. commented on the latter’s talks with US Secretary of Agriculture, Dan Glickman at the Department of Agriculture. Reportedly, Dan Glickman expressed the interest of the US that the DR increase its market share in dairy product imports of the DR. He said that the DR is importing US$120 million a year from other exporters, and would like the US to increase its participation in that market. To this, Mejía reportedly responded, "we are not interested in importing food products, what we need is to produce them. For example, if instead of importing milk from the US we would like to import milk-producing cows, of those that you don’t know what to do with them, because there is a surplus, and we even hear they are being slain."
