Max Puig, coordinator of European Union-Lomé programs in the DR, told El Caribe newspaper that if the Mejía administration follows through with the programs developed by the Lomé office in Santo Domingo during the Fernandez administration, the country could enjoy resources of up to RD$5,000 million for the period 2000-2004. This is up from RD$2,500 million that were available from 1996-2000. Furthermore, Puig said that if all goes well, the nation may be able to access RD$10,000 million for 2004-2008. On a European tour, President-elect Hipólito Mejía met yesterday in Brussels with Javier Solana, in charge of foreign policy for the European Union. According to EFE, the Spanish press agency, Mejía emphasized that his government’s top priorities will be education, health, housing and cultural programs.
