DR defeats Puerto Rico in World Basketball Championship

The National Basketball Team Sub-21 defeated Puerto Rico 99-77 in the second game played in the Panamerican Tournament being held in Riberao Preto, Brazil. The first half of the game ended in a 47-47 tie. The tournament will classify three teams for the World Basketball Games set for Saitama, Japan in August 2001. Previously, the DR had defeated Canada. The DR now goes on to play Brazil for the bronze medal. The DR won a slot in the Pan Am tournament by winning the gold in the recently ended Central American and Caribbean Basketball Championship held in Panama. Team members are: Wilkins Bonilla, Wilkins Tavarez, Emil Monegro, Luis Flores, Benito Flores, Juan Rivera, Walter Snirple, Randy Guzman, Eulis Baez, Jack Michael Martinez, Carlos Morban and Amaurys Filion. Coaches are Jose Dominguez and Victor Hansen. The DR squad faces Brazil at 9 pm. The semifinals will be held Saturday stating at 1 pm. And the finals will be disputed on Sunday.
