UASD authorities expel 19, fire 57 professors, and suspend 11,000 failing students

The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo authorities have announced the suspension of 11,000 students for their low grades. Likewise, the university authorities cancelled 57 professors that were not fulfilling their duties. The university also announced the expelling of 19 students that were said to be responsible for the July closing of the UASD. The unruly students protested against the university increasing the cost of the summer credit from RD$15 to RD$40. As a result of the impasse, the summer course was lost. Hoy newspaper editorialist strongly supported the move. "The university is being rid of vandals that do not study, of professors that do not give classes, of promoters of disorder," he proclaimed. Among the students expelled was 41-year old Carlos Feliz Cuello, who had been first enrolled in the university 21 years ago and maintained a 66 grade average.
