Guillermo Moreno says efforts to combat corruption were merely propaganda

Guillermo Moreno, the well respected former District Attorney of Santo Domingo, criticized the PLD administration efforts to combat corruption. He said that there was more concern for political marketing, for the image of the government than for instating true reforms that would put into place a system to combat corruption in office. He said the government gave priority to celebrating conferences, grand events, creating departments, but deep down there was not a true fight against corruption. Given all the propaganda that was carried out, one would have believed that war was being declared against corruption, he said. He said that the attitude of the new authorities should not be to request that citizens bring the proof of corruption in office, but that the smallest complaint of corruption be investigated by the authorities to give satisfaction to the citizen as to whether there has been or not corruption in the case denounced. Moreno recognized the achievements of the present administration. He said there is a general consensus that the PLD administration fostered macroeconomic stability, an intense, positive and fruitful foreign policy, brought decency to the performance of several public institutions, a profound judicial reform and the independence of this branch of government, as well as it brought decency to and strengthened the institution of the Attorney General office.
