Taiwan's President pledges support

The president of Taiwan affirmed that his government will continue to provide economic aid to, and will encourage continued investment in, the DR. Lien Shui-Bian, leading his country’s delegation to Hipolito Mejia’s inauguration, stated that the friendship between the two countries is well-established and that Mejia who has visited the Asian nation a dozen or more times is a good friend to the people of Taiwan. Shui-Bian announced that Taiwan would immediately provide US$4.8, the heretofore-unfunded portion of a US$28 million IMF grant for the modernization of the legislative branch. Shui-Bian dismissed suggestions in the press that Taiwan’s financial support is a quid pro quo for the DR’s political-diplomatic support. We do not follow "dollar diplomacy," he said.
