Pan Am Games to cost RD$900 million

El Siglo newspaper reports on comments made by the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee and Organizing Committee of the 2003 Santo Domingo Pan American Games. Dr. José Joaquín Puello said on the Uno + Uno television program produced by Juan Bolívar Díaz and Adalberto Grullón on Teleantillas that the Games will cost RD$900 million and will generate RD$1,200 million. He is confident the 2003 Games will be profitable, as the television rights are expected to reap more than the Winnipeg Games. He said that 14 provinces will benefit from sports installations that will be built with soft loans from Venezuela. Breakdown of the funds: Equipment: RD$200 million Technology, communications and computers: RD$250 million Transportation: RD$80 million Food: RD$69 million Personnel: RD$153 million Other: RD$148 million Puello said that the government will use 636 of the 1,600 apartments slated to be built in the vicinity of the Santo Domingo Cyberpark. The government would be contributing the cost of the lot. The apartments will be used to lodge employees working and students studying in the Park. The Cyberpark housing complex would be built with a loan by the Banco Bilbao of Spain. Puello said that several companies are expected to donate the vehicles needed for transport of participants and Games personnel in exchange for sponsorship rights. Organizers estimate they will use about 800 cars and 400 buses. The idea is for the government to allow the vehicles to enter the country duty free. These vehicles would be used by volunteers that would work in the Games that would later be tax exempt.
