President Hipólito Mejía will not travel to Guatemala next 27 September to attend a Central American Summit as originally was announced. President Mejía just returned from meeting with Central American heads of state and Mexican President-elect Vicente Fox in San José, Costa Rica. Press spokesman Luís González Fabra said that President Mejía has on his agenda a trip to Jamaica on 28-29 September to participate in a Caribbean Summit with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien. On 2 October, he will be in Venezuela for the signing of the Pact of Caracas, that will provide favorable petroleum purchase conditions for the DR. González also confirmed that President Mejía will host King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia of Spain, on 14, 15 and 16 November in Santo Domingo. The monarchs will be in Santo Domingo as they make their way to the Iberoamerican Summit that will be held in Panama this year. It has been said President Mejía will attend the Panama summit, especially since the DR is host to the 2001 Iberoamerican Summit. Mejía also promised Mexican President-elect Vicente Fox that he would attend the latter’s inaugural in December in Mexico.
