Despite an elbow injury, Dominican weightlifter Wanda Rijo managed to finish eighth in the world in the Olympic Games. Wanda Rijo was a gold medal winner in the Pan American Games (Winnipeg, Canada) and the Central American and Caribbean Games (Maracaibo, Venezuela). Dominican swimmer Guillermo Cabrera, first Dominican ever to participate in a Pan Am game finished fourth in his heat clocking in at 2:08.22 in the 200 backstroke. He swam in the first preliminary heat of the event and defeated two swimmers. He did not set a new national record in the event. Juan Ubaldo Cabrera lost to Australian boxer Richard Rowles (16-7). Judo competitors Juan Carlos Jacinto (60 kilograms) lost to Omar Rebahi of Argelia and Eleucadia Vargas was disqualified in her fight against Korean Sun Ji Kyong. Pending is the performance of Playter Reyes in weightlifting (105 kilograms), Jose Augusto Geraldino (100 kilograms) and Eugenio Vasquez (100 kilograms) in judo and Felix Sanchez (400 meters/hurdles) and Johelin Santa (400 meters) in track and field. Yovanny Lorenzo advanced to a second round and will see action against German boxer Steve Kuchler.
