News reports highlight the successful two-hand implant carried out at the Salvador Gautier Social Security Hospital yesterday. Taxi driver 37-year old Rafael Polanco suffered the loss of his two hands in a machete fight at around 11 pm on Wednesday. A friend adequately preserved his hands, and after visiting several clinics, he finally was interned at the Salvador Gautier hospital. He does not have the social security plan, but nevertheless, two plastic surgeons that were called on early in the morning agreed to operate on him at 3:30 am without charge. The outlook for his recovering the use of his two hands was said to be good. The plastic surgery team of the Gautier has carried out 17 successful hand implants. Credit is going to surgeons Marcos Núñez and Hector Herrand, who were accompanied by José Ernesto Abreu, and other hospital staff.
