The Attorney General said that he will not bend to pressures, or be scared by demands, to act precipitously in cases of alleged corruption by officials of the previous government. Virgilio Bello Rosa stated that he remains ?undaunted by pressures? to jail those who are named in indictments for corruption. Nor will he be influenced, he said, by the demands on the other side by those who do not want to see former government officers jailed. ?If I respond to pressures then I wouldn?t be able to do my job and I ought not to be Attorney General. Bello Rosa declined to offer details on the names of those being investigated, on the charges involved, or on the current state of the investigations. Bello Rosa told reporters that, ?when the investigations are complete, I will hold a press conference and can tell you something.? He offered brief comments on just two of cases that have previously been featured in press coverage. Regarding Alexandrina German, former Assistant to the President who is accused of mismanagement of university scholarship funds but has refused to answer a summons, the Attorney General – who has admitted his long-time personal friendship with her – said, ?everyone who is cited will have to appear.? With respect to Luis Ynchausti, former director of the Program of Evaluation of Minimal Employment, Bello Rosa said that ?the investigation is very advanced.? Ynchausti?s sister?s bank account became the repository of some 18,000 checks issued by the program.
