To Latin nations are competing for a seat on the UN?s Security Council. In addition to the Dominican Republic, which filed its application for the 2002-2003 biennial opening three years ago, Venezuela wants the prestigious spot. It filed its application earlier this year. In the UN?s system, Security Council representation tries, as much as possible, to assure regional representation to all nations. The selection for the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) will be made in the XXVI General Assembly meeting in New York in September of 2001. Venezuela has served twice on the Security Council. The Dominican Republic, which is a charter UN member, has never served.
