On the front page of today?s sports section, Listin Diario speculates that Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs, Alex Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners, and Manny Ramirez of the Cleveland Indians, could very soon become the first Big League baseball players to win US$20 million a year contracts. The newspaper states that Alex Rodriguez 8-figure salary is ?guaranteed? and that it will be part of a 10-year, US$200 million dollar package. Sosa?s negotiations are underway and will result in a salary of not less than US$17 million, and quite probably more. Manny Ranmirez, who previously turned down a 5-year, US$75 million contract with the Cleveland Indians, is currently negotiating ?with his team? and is expected to obtain a few million dollars more, according to Listin Diario. Pedro Martinez was the first Dominican to earn more than US$10 million, when he signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox in 1998 for US$12 million.
