Senate President implies that Marranzini speaks for tax evaders

The President of the Senate, Ramon Alburquerque, asked the President of the National Private Enterprise Council (CONEP), Celso Marranzini, to clarify whether his opposition to a proposed wholesale tax represents the view of his organization of tax evaders. When asked by reporters to comment on the attitude toward new taxes that has been expressed by the business sector, Alburquerque replied, ?Which? Businessmen who pay their taxes or those who evade them?? CONEP issued a public statement this week saying that the proposed 2.5% wholesale tax would result in bankruptcies, layoffs, and a competitive disadvantage for the DR vis-?-vis other Caribbean and Central American countries. ?Is my friend Marranzini spokesman for the evaders of for a National Private Enterprise Council that complies with the law? First I want to know that,? Alburquerque told reporters.
