Workshop is first activity of new Fernández foundation

The Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo formally begins its work tonight with the inauguration of a workshop in which three former Latin American presidents will be participating. These are Eduardo Frei (Chile), Armando Calderón (El Salvador) and Ramiro de León (Guatemala). Former President Leonel Fernández will give the opening address at 8 pm at the Salon Anacaona of the Hotel Jaragua. The event will continue on Tuesday, 21 November and Wednesday, 22 November. The scheduled talks will cover the challenges of democracy in Latin America; governability, economic growth and the fight against poverty; civic society as a strong role player in democracy today; the importance of the media in democracy; political parties in Latin America democracy. Chairing the panels will be Temístocles Montás, Carlos Dore, and Adriano Miguel Tejada, three high-ranking officers in the past Fernández administration.
