Conflicts of interest foreseen

The General Attorney of the Nation, Abel Rodríguez del Orbe said that the choice of lawyer Juan Manuel Pellerano Gómez as director of the National Judge School was not a wise one. He foresaw that the decision will have pernicious influence in Dominican justice. Rodríguez del Orbe pointed out that Dr. Pellerano Gómez is the head of one of the largest law firms in the Dominican Republic, with over 50 lawyers on staff. He recognized Pellerano Gómez’s professional qualifications and described him as "serious, honest and capable" but said that he will not be able to get around the effect he will have on the future judges. Rodríguez del Orbe said that a not involved person, such as Dr. Manuel Bergés Chupani should have been chosen instead by the Supreme Court to direct the new institution. The Escuela Nacional de la Magistratura is not lawfully created yet, as Congress has not passed the bill that incorporates it. Marino Vinicio Castillo on a TV show also criticized the appointment. He said that unfortunately the fact that lawyers do not make the best judges has not been taken into account.
