The Operativo Navidad 98, the coordinating group of Civil Defense, Red Cross and Police efforts to reduce accidents and tragedies during the Christmas holiday (23, 24, 25 and 26 December) , reported that 32 persons died and 110 were injured. Most that died did so in traffic accidents. Most accidents occurred along the Duarte and Las Americas highways. Most involved in traffic accidents had been drinking. Because of the ban on firecrackers, there were no burns reported in emergency rooms.
