Chauffeur union leader, Juan Hubieres, was released by judge Mario Cruz Durán after paying a bail of RD$350,000. Hubieres was arrested together with 38 other chauffeurs accused by the National Police of illegal gun possession and obstructing traffic. The union leader and chauffeurs had aggressively protested in front of the National Palace for the exclusion of the union chauffeurs from routes being assigned by the government as part of its traffic improvement plan. Hubieres says the government has been favoring sectors with special privileges in order to affect the strength of his union.
