Former Vice President of the Republic, Jacinto Peynado, said he would accept the nomination as mayor of Santo Domingo if the board of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano would be willing to support and work for a win of the party. In 1996, Peynado ran for president on the PRSC ticket, but the board of the party sponsored PLD candidate, today’s president, Leonel Fernández. Peynado has been senator for the PRSC in Santo Domingo on two occasions. The businessman, nevertheless, said he would not seek the municipal or congressional post as he aspires to become president in year 2000. Peynado would be a very strong candidate for the PRSC in the capital. He has won the senatorial seat on two occasions.
