The National Police is giving motorcyclists ten days to purchase and begin wearing protective helmets. The Police, which four weeks ago began enforcing regulations contained in Law 241 on traffic, says motorcyclists also have ten days to install mufflers and correct any problems with their lights. The Police has announced that motorcyclists found in violation as of 22 December will be arrested for 48 hours. The Police campaign to get Dominican drivers to comply with the traffic law is working, especially since the word has gotten around that drivers caught passing a red light will be detained for 48 hours for "driver re-education" at the National Police headquarters. It has been known that Police officers are not accepting bribes, not forgiving women drivers and influences are not helpful, and thus violations have begun to reduce considerably.
