A report in the Listin Diario indicates that the uncertainty and delay in the proclamation of the winners of the municipal and congressional primaries of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano are proof of the internal leadership problems of that organization. The leader of the PRD, Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez, suffers from cancer of the pancreas. Peña Gómez has warned that if irregularities are detected in the recounting of the votes, he will annul the convention and designate a fourth candidate for mayor of Santo Domingo. Luís Mariñez has proclaimed himself winner, but Miguel Vargas has contested the legitimacy of the vote. Peña Gómez has given the electoral commission of the party 72 hours to announce official results.
