Alleged head of beach land scandal sent to stand trial

Barahona businessman Moises Marchena, arrested over the weekend, will go before the District Attorney today to initiate proceedings against him in the Bahia de las Aguilas beach land scandal. The National Police will pass the fugitive of justice over to the District Attorney. He was arrested Saturday at 2 am in an apartment where he was drinking champagne, accompanied by two unidentified women. The operation was directed by the Commander of the Secret Service, Bernardo Santiago, together with a district attorney assistant assigned to the Drug Control Division. In the Dominican Republic, homes can be searched in evening hours only by the drug control department. Attorney General Abel Rodríguez del Orbe had requested that police chief Major General Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminián arrest Marchena. The National Police arrested Marchena seven hours later. According to Rodríguez del Orbe, Marchena is the head of the operation whereby persons irregularly appropriated hundreds of meters of lands in the Bahia de las Aguilas tourist area. Pedernales Senator Antonio Feliz Perez is also involved in the scandal, and his case will be heard by the Supreme Court of Justice.
