The Central Government notified the Municipality of Santo Domingo that as of January, the Municipality will have to pay Dixi Sanitary for the garbage collection services provided by the firm in Santo Domingo. Hoy newspaper indicated that the decision of the Presidency was rejected by the municipality and the garbage collection company itself. The government points to the increase in funds of the Municipality that after the passing of Law 17-97 receives 4% of total taxes collected by the Central Government. The contract with Dixi has been contested on several occasions because the company only collects from 1,500 to 1,800 tons a day of an estimated 2,500 tons of garbage produced. While the muncipality has not been providing garbage collection service to the larger part of the population in Santo Domingo, the municipality charges city residents for garbage collection. Most city residents simply ignore the bill.
