Make a note of the 11 official holidays in the Dominican Republic for 1998. As of last year, and per law 139-97, holidays that fall on a Tuesday or Wednesday will be celebrated on the previous Monday, and those that fall on Thursday or Friday will be celebrated on the following Monday, with the exception of religious holidays. Also note that there is the general custom of not working as of noon on Good Thursday during Holy Week, and as of noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. These holidays are the following: JanuaryThursday, 1 January, New Year’s Day Monday, 5 January, commemorating Three Kings Day that falls on 6 January, will be a working day. Wednesday, 21 January. In honor of the Virgen de la Altagracia, our patron saint. Monday, 26 January in honor of the birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte, founder of the nation. February Friday, 27 February. Independence Day. April Friday, 10 April. Good Friday. May Monday, 4 May, will commemorate Labor Day, which falls on 1 May. June Thursday, 11 June, Corpus Christi. August Sunday, 16 August, commemorating the restoration of independence from Spain. September Thursday, 24 September. Commemorating the Day of the Virgen de las Mercedes, patron saint of the Dominican Republic. November Monday, 9 November commemorating the Day of the First Constitution, which falls on Friday 6.December Friday, 25 December, Christmas Day.
