Presidency would veto telecommunications bill

Government party congressman, Bautista Rojas Gómez said the Executive Branch would veto the telecommunications bill if passed by the Senate as received from the Chamber of Deputies. In extraordinary haste, the bill was submitted by and passed by the Chamber of Deputies last month. Another telecommunications bill, the result of lengthy discussions and consensus among affected parties and the government, was slated to be submitted to Congress in the session that begins February 1998. That bill was written up with the assistance of the United Nations and the International Telecommunications Union. Now, Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) senator Milagros Ortíz Bosch is requesting that President Leonel Fernández send the bill to the Senate. Presently, the Senate is reviewing a bill sent by the Chamber of Deputies and would like to compare it to the one yet to be presented by the Executive Branch.
