The Ministry of Public Works is promising to finish the majestic bridge under construction over the Higuamo River in San Pedro de Macor?s by this December, according to a report in Hoy newspaper. The 606-meter long bridge hangs 106 meters over the river and will enable travelers en route from La Romana to Santo Domingo to shave off another half-hour from the trip. Already, with the opening of the Autovia del Este the trip takes half an hour less than previously, for a total of one and a half hour?s travel time. With the completion of the bridge, travel to and from La Romana will be even further reduced. At present, travelers are obliged to make a detour by passing the Cementos Mexicanos plant. Once the bridge is opened, it will be a direct route. The bridge is a RD$750-million investment, where for months construction had been suspended.
