Public Works Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado announced
that La Isabela International Airport will be inaugurated in November, as
reported in the Listin Diario. The airport has yet to be certified for operation
and news reports indicate that birds attracted by the nearby Duquesa garbage
dump and the La Isabela River ecosystem present certain problems for aircraft
operations at the airport. The facility was built to replace the Herrera
International Airport, where the land has already been sold by the state in view
of its debt to public works contractors.
