Thinking outside the box

Pro Poor Tourism and The Travel Foundation, that work with British Tour Operators who seek to contribute to the development of responsible tourism, will host a one-day workshop this coming Friday, 8 July in Santo Domingo. The event has the backing of the National Association of Hotels & Restaurants and the Asonahores Foundation. The speakers are: Caroline Ashley of the Pro Tourism Team of the Overseas Development Institute of the UK government and Harold Goodwin, of Responsible Tourism.

The objectives of the workshop are to explore ways to improve linkages between the tourism industry and the local economy, and for the development of new complementary businesses. The speakers will explore some of the ways to optimize the impact of the tourism sector for local development and poverty reduction The speakers will focus on agribusiness linkages, travel agencies, local excursions, art, culture, entertainment businesses, relations with local residents and the communities. Challenges ahead and success stories in other parts of the world will be analyzed. The speakers will also address the role of government and policies.
