Laser Cup Las Terrenas 2006

Samana hosted the most important laser sailing event since the Pan American Games in 2003 at Las Terrenas beach last week. Twenty competitors from eight countries took part in the event organized by the Dominican Sailing Federation. Canadian Bernard Luttmer won in the laser standard category, followed by competitors Gustavo Lima from Portugal, Brad Funk from the United States, Alejandro Foglia (Uruguay), Diego Romero (Argentina), Karl James (Antigua), Ernesto Rodriguez (United States) and Raul Aguayo (Dominican Republic). In the Laser Radial category, Canadian Keamia Rasa was first, followed by Andres Villanueva and Franco Villanueva (Puerto Rico and Dominicans Sebastian Mera and Andres Castillo. The level of competitors in the event was said to be outstandingly high. Lima is a former 2003 world champion, ranked 6th in the world by the International Sailing Federation. Luttmer came second in the North American Laser Championship in 2005 and is ranked 10th in the world. Diego Romero is seven times Argentinian national champion, and was gold medalist in the South American Games in 2002, and second place in the world laser championship in 2005 and is ranked 14th in the world. Raul Aguayo is a bronze medalist from the 2003 Pan-American Games.
