The Dominican Republic’s top Laser sailor, Raul Aguayo, has won the Sixth Caribbean Laser Midwinter Cabarete Tournament, held 11-13 January in Cabarete, Puerto Plata. This is the only Olympic class regatta in the Caribbean. The event is governed by ISAF (International Sailing Federation) and the results count for the international ranking.
Aguayo, who seeks to win one of the remaining slots available to the Americas in the Beijing Olympics, defeated several leading Olympians who came for the event. Placing behind Aguayo were Lee Parkhill (Canada), Anthony Boueilh (Canada), Ari Barshi (DR), Chris Dold (Canada), Keith Wilkins (Great Britain), Tim Landt (USA), Benoit Meesemacker (France), Mike Schmidt (USA) and Vaughn Harrison (Canada). Irina Perez, Jordi Bros, Jean Pierre Domino and Andrea Verdeja competed in the Laser radial races, and Luis Prida and Sebastian Bros in the Laser 4.7 races. In the master category, Ari Barshi (DR) was first, followed by Keith Wilkins, Tim Landt, Mike Schmidt and David Hartman. The event was sponsored by Marquee Sapphire, Sea Pro Divers, Dakine, Thule Racks and EZE Bar, among others.
