Hotelier Polibio Schiffino of Casa Bonita Tropical Lodge, a Small Luxury Hotels of the World boutique hotel, says Barahona has the geographical characteristics to complement the “sun and beach” so traditional to Dominican tourism. On occasion of the start of scheduled flights into Barahona’s Maria Montez International Airport, Schiffino said: “Barahona give something more than sun and beach, plus the marvels of a natural countryside that is marvelous, full of contrasts between the sea, the mountains and an impressive geographical diversity.”
The hotelier pointed out that Barahona can offer tourists unique visits to some very singular places: The Neiba National Park, the Magnetic Pole, the Jaragua National Park, Lake Enriquillo and the Cabritos Island National Park. In addition there are the Larimar mines, the Bahia de las Aguilas bay, and the Hoyo of Pelempito, the natural depression. He also mentioned Barahona has the only biosphere reserve in the Caribbean. It is made up of Lake Enriquillo, the Bahoruco Mountains and the Barahona Peninsula. Biosphere reserves are special ecological systems that combine land and sea features recognized by the Man and the Biosphere Program of the UNESCO.
Schiffino, a pioneer of tourism in the region, said that the new flight is a great boost to tourism in the region moving. The M&N Aviation Services flight will offer regular flights to Maria Montez on a 19-seat airplane on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. M&N Aviation Services is located at the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
