New Gildan apparel plant in San Pedro de Macoris

President Danilo Medina attended the inaugural of a Gildan Activewear apparel plant in the San Pedro de Macoris Industrial Free Zone. Gildan is a leader in sportswear in the US and Canada that began operations in the Dominican Republic in 2004.

The company’s executive vice president for global manufacturing, Benito Masi came for the inaugural of the US$12.5 million plant that will employ 2,000. The company also has factories in Bella Vista and Las Americas (Santo Domingo province). It expects to generate more than 5,000 jobs by the end of the year in the Dominican Republic.

Also attending the inaugural was the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta and the Minister of Labor, Maritza Hernandez as well as the Ambassador of Canada in the DR, Georges Boisse. Other officials who attended the ceremony included the director general of INFOTEP Idionis Perez, the president of the Association of Free Zones, Aquiles Bermudez and the president of the Association of Free Zones of San Pedro, Eduardo Bogaert.
