Pope Francis met with Dominican President Danilo Medina during an around 30-minute private audience at the Vatican this morning, Friday 13 June at 10:30am. They discussed the Dominican government plan for legalization and naturalization of foreigners underway since 2 June 2014. The legalization plan is being applied to people who were not born in the country but who entered the country legally and who overstayed their permits as well as to children of parents who are/were in the country illegally after entering the country without proper documents, as reported in El Nuevo Diario.
During his visit to Rome, President Medina also visited the headquarters of the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), the specialized agency of the United Nations that operates as an international financial institution. At the IFAD, the Dominican delegation was received by IFAD vice president Michel Mordasini. Mordasini praised the harmony between Dominican government policies and those of the IFAD. President Medina asked for the collaboration of the IFAD to secure new markets for Dominican products. “There is no sense in increasing production, if we do not have markets,” said President Medina. The meeting at the IFAD was coordinated by Mario Arvelo, ambassador at the Dominican mission at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome.
President Medina is expected back in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
