Brazil ambassador Jose Marcus Vinicius de Sousa was in Puerto Plata for the re-launch of Puerto Plata to the Brazilian market. A delegation from Brazil was at the Mount Isabel de Torres Botanical Gardens to unveil a plaque commemorating the connection between the Christ the Redeemer statues atop Mount Isabel de Torres in Puerto and the Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro.
Dignitaries attending the ceremony also included provincial governor Eridania Llibre, Puerto Plata bishop Julio Cesar Corniel, and Ministry of Tourism officials. The event features the planting of a tree common to both Brazil and the Dominican Republic, the Ceiba Pentandra (Kapok).
The event was part of the province’s latest campaign to reposition Puerto Plata, one of the first tourism destinations in the Dominican Republic. Puerto Plata’s Tourism & Cultural Cluster has been highlighting the destination’s eco-tourism and cultural highlights, in addition to its popular sun and sand attractions along more than 100 km of coastline, such as the beaches of Playa Dorada, Sosua and Cabarete.
Puerto Plata is the main urban hub of the north coast, with more than 300,000 inhabitants. It is also well known for its 19th century Victorian era heritage.
