DR and New Zealand establish formal diplomatic relations

The Dominican Republic and New Zealand signed a protocol for formal bilateral diplomatic relations on Sunday, 29 June 2014, based on a mutual desire for development, friendship and cooperation between the two countries. New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully, who was visiting the DR last week to attend the Central American Integration System (SICA) summit of regional presidents, signed for New Zealand and his counterpart, Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso for the Dominican Republic.

Ambassadors will now be appointed to be accredited by each country.

Morales said that New Zealand and the Dominican Republic could be great partners, especially in areas like farming (agriculture and livestock) and renewable energy.

Minister McCully said that scholarships would be offered to Dominican students and announced that a non-resident ambassador would be appointed.
