The Specialized Corps for Tourism Security (CESTUR) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) signed an agreement yesterday, Thursday 24 July 2014 to prevent the sexual exploitation of children and teenagers by travelers. CESTUR director General Justo Martin Amilcar Fernandez Tejada signed for CESTUR and UNICEF director Maria Jesus Conde Zabala for UNICEF at the event at the CESTUR offices. The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Tourism Fausto Fernandez, executive vice president of the National Hotel & Tourism Association (Asonahores) Arturo Villanueva, and his wife Susana Brugal, who is the president of the Asonahores’ Ladies Association. Both organizations have committed to training CESTUR members in the prevention of sexual exploitation of children and teenagers. The agreement also includes changes to police training, specialist trainers in hotels and other tourist businesses, as well as security personnel. “The Tourism Police plays a key role in the prevention of crimes linked to sexual exploitation because their members are on the streets, they have privileged information about what goes on in their communities and have a legal mandate to guarantee the security of citizens, especially the most vulnerable, such as minors,” said Maria Jesus Conde.
